  • Do you accept insurance?

Unfortunately, in most cases, I do not. However, if you are insured, please check if you have any “out of network” benefits or a FSA or HSA accounts for mental health, as these are increasingly more common. If so, you may be eligible to get partial reimbursement for each session and/or a tax reduction for the yearly amount you spend on therapy.

Like many therapists, I choose not to take insurance for two reasons. First, I do not want to be required to diagnose clients after our first session or justify our course of treatment to a corporation because that feels unethical. Second, most insurance companies will not cover my full rate and require hours of extra paperwork, making it difficult for me to earn a livable wage and do my best work.

In an effort to make therapy more accessible, I offer ten sliding scale slots (starting at $125) on my caseload. If you are in need of therapy at a lower fee than that please visit my Resources page for recommendations.

  • Where are you located?

I offer in-person therapy in Berkeley, CA. My office is in South Berkeley, near the Oakland border, about a 10 minute walk from the Ashby BART station. It is accessible for wheelchair users and has a gender inclusive restroom. I also offer sessions outside at various parks in the East Bay.

I prefer to work in-person with locals. Some of my clients alternate between online and in-person sessions.

I offer virtual therapy sessions for all California residents, as well as coaching sessions and classes for those outside of California.

  • What is your new client, short term & KAT Therapy cancellation policy?

For new and short-term therapy clients, I have a 48 hrs cancellation policy. Meaning if you provide less that 48 hrs notice, you will be charged the full session fee, unless the therapist has availability to reschedule you that week and you attend that make-up session.

Ketamine Assisted Therapy sessions require 5 business days of notice and adjunctive KAT prep and integration sessions require 48 hrs notice.

  • What is your long term therapy cancellation policy?

After the first 3 months of therapy, the cancellation policy shifts.  You are allowed 3 no-pay absences per therapy calendar year (August 1-July 31) regardless of the reason (vacation, illness, business, etc.) as long as you provide at least 1 hour of notice.

With less than an hours's notice or beyond 3 cancellations per therapy calendar year (for any reason), you will be charged the full session rate, whether or not you can attend, unless we can find a mutually agreed upon time to reschedule, which is not always possible.

You can also expect that I will take 2-4 weeks of vacation or sick days every year. We will not meet on those weeks, nor will you be charged.

I find this combination of policies works better for balancing the needs of therapists and clients than a traditional cancellation policy. While some therapists over pack their schedules to account for income loss of cancellations, I’d much rather address these financial concerns transparently with clients, so I can protect the quality of care I provide.

The majority of therapists do not receive paid time off. While giving us ample notice for planned absences is helpful logistically, it does not account for the fact that we can’t temporarily add more clients to account for financial loss of those absences.

I find the policies above to provide a healthy balance between anticipating client needs, protecting the quality and progress of their treatment, and providing the therapist with some peace of mind around receiving fair and consistent compensation for their work.

  • How often do we meet?

Because transformative work requires consistency and frequency, we meet weekly. After we feel like you’ve met the majority of your therapeutic goals, we can discuss meeting less frequently as we transition to closure.

Alternatively, some clients attend twice weekly when they are in need of more support. Ketamine-assisted therapy has a different treatment protocol and cadence.

  • How long are sessions?

Typically sessions are 50 minutes. However, because some clients find it challenging to drop in, get into deeper emotional territory, and recover in under an hour, I also offer 80 and 100 minute sessions as needed. Ketamine-assisted therapy sessions are 3 hours, but the preparation and integration sessions are 50 minutes.

  • Where can I file a legal or ethical complaint against my therapist?

The Board of Behavioral Sciences receives and responds to complaints regarding services provided within the scope of practice of (marriage and family therapists, licensed educational psychologists, clinical social workers, or professional clinical counselors). If you ever feel like I or any other therapist, counselor, or social worker has harmed you, you may contact the board online at www.bbs.ca.gov, or by calling (916) 574-7830
